Animal mediation workshop

Animal mediation, like other mediation media that is probably better known: art therapy or music therapy, is one more card for organizing awakening, educational or therapeutic activities. It is here through the animal, mediator and accomplice of the helping relationship, that we go to meet the person.

Animal mediation is based on the attraction that the animal exerts on people and on its ability to stimulate them. The animal animates a desire that allows to create or facilitate the meeting or the helping relationship. It therefore aims to put pets, specifically educated, in contact with vulnerable people (people suffering from various disorders, whether physical, cognitive, psychological or social) in order to elicit positive reactions.

We speak of mediation, because the animal becomes a transitional agent between the person and the professionals

In a mediation situation, we speak of a triadic relationship (V. Servais)

The caregiver, the animal and the school's referent.

Why does the relationship with the animal facilitate the relationship with humans? Why is the animal a fabulous mediator?

Because the relational structure of the animal is simplified, it is spontaneous, it does not judge.

Communication with the animal can be multi-channel and allows everyone to enter into a relationship, which is a vital necessity, with their own means: by touch and contact, by mutual gaze. The presence of an animal allows us to create new realities where the lack of language is not an obstacle to the rewarding relationship. The animal is capable of reciprocity and affection, the person enters an intimate sphere with him.

Because the relationship with the animal allows for a wide variety of stimulations; Through its interactivity, it puts people in contact with their environment by stimulating attention, memory, concentration, and creating purpose and motivation for motor activities.

The animal is a wonderful factor of resilience. Also, many observations have underlined that animals can respond to the 5 basic skills, allowing a good emotional development of the person, and especially of the child, on which we can build beneficial reactions through positive reinforcements:

- The person must be in a situation of sustained visual stimulation

- The person feels an impetus to interaction, a desire to "go towards"

- The animal allows us to identify and project ourselves (mirror animal) and thus promotes affiliative behaviours. It is often their own feelings that people share with us by telling us about those of animals.

- The animal stimulates the structured and targeted organization of the gesture

- It promotes the ability to reproduce, imitate.

The choice of animals is made during a discovery session where we see the reaction and the request of the beneficiaries.

We work with living beings so we have to leave room for everyone's feelings.
